On the outside of the centerpiece I chose to use harmonious colors — blue and green — because I thought this would strengthen the feeling of motion. If I had chosen a different color I fear that it would have distracted from this. The ring in the middle is colored gold so that it creates a firm barrier between the hot and cool colors. If I had chosen to use the same shade of green for this inner ring then the red would have lost it’s feeling of being quarantined — the green would flow right into the red, naturally.

The inner ring has a violent nature due to it being the only source of warm colors in the drawing.  I used different shades of red for the different parts of the circle — the eye has trouble telling between different shades of red, making this area even more uncomfortable. If you’ve been reading my blog, then you know that I like to use complimentary colors to my full advantage. Red and green are complimentary colors, but the green is significantly brighter than the red behind it, creating tension. The fact that the green figure is divorced from any other cool color and forced to deal with the red on her own seals the state of unease present in this drawing.

When I did my preliminary visit of New Mexico before moving here I was really struck by the landscape. It was during New Mexico’s Winter, but still, there was so much sunlight, and so many yellows and light browns. And mountains! I decided to color this drawing in a more realistic manner than I approach most of my abstract drawings — the color scheme of the plane even matches the airline I flew in on! I can’t wait to see what this place looks like in the Spring and in the Summer.

A Night of Clarity, Pt. I

 

Back in January of this year I was listening to Roger Waters’ album The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking and I realized I could do some vivid illustrations for the song. I figured that I could even plot out the number of drawings I’d need, and what they’d entail, in much the same way as I write a comic script. I even broke it down into seconds, so the drawings would line up with the music. I have a proto-type of a YouTube video that syncs up the drawings and the audio track but I’d like to tweak it some more before I make that public. I am, however, ready to start sharing some of the artwork itself.

I’ve probably said it before on this site, but Roger Waters’ music resonates with me on a deeply personal level and he’s a big artistic hero of mine. I’m aware that some people — especially David Gilmour fans — find his solo efforts to be sparse in the musical department, but his overall use of atmosphere and narrative in addition to music stimulates my brain like crazy. I’m a story teller at heart, regardless of what medium I’m currently working in, and I’m amazed by Roger’s ability to make a sweeping and epic story into one body of music. It’s one of those times where I lament that the relative and subjective nature of reality; I wish I could share with you exactly the joy I experience from the music. I can’t do that, of course, but hopefully you’ll be able to see my love reflected in these drawings.

This particular album — the Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking — tells the story of a man unsure whether he’s happy in his marriage. Over the course of a few hours early one morning he has a series of dreams about him picking up a female hitchhiker and running away with her. Through the course of this dream affair this person’s insecurities and desires are laid bare to the listener, and the main character ultimately comes to a conclusion about his life. I’ve always been endlessly fascinated by dreams, and I love the intimate exploration of dreams that this album details.

I’m considering collecting these drawings and adding original captions and making a book out of it. I’m pretty certain I could find a wily way to skirt copyright laws with. But! Without further ado:

It’s funny how the subject of a drawing can quietly slip away. .The purple in this angel’s coat isn’t really conspicuous enough to give it a bold distinction from the various shades of blue lingering around the drawing — it’s only a subtle division. If I had colored the coat in the same shades as the little crystals, then the coat would just be large blocks of color. If I hadn’t highlighted the wings, feet, and head of the angel then the main focus of the drawing would have disappeared in the wallpaper, so to speak; the angel would have been hidden.

When I’ve got the outline of a drawing down the image is only half-way out of its quantum state — there’s still all of these possible color combinations competing for dominance. Then I choose a color scheme and all of the possibilities are peeled away leaving only the final product. I could do multiple different colorings of the same drawing if I wanted to, but as I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I don’t want to drag my feet on the same drawing forever — I’ve got a lot of things I want to do.

As for the meaning of the drawing, I suppose it would depend on how much my fascination with focus interacts with the actual image of an angel. If you just want to look at the angel — who seems to be imbued with both grace and patience — Then I suppose you could take it as hope existing in the background of our lives. If you read a bit more into the meta-stuff I’ve rambled on about then you could say this drawing is about how we often can’t see any hope but that it still exists. Or maybe this drawing is just a playful reflection on focus in art.

Maybe there’s no meaning at all. Ooo, that’s unsettling.

It’s really hard to make plans in life. It’s hard enough to see what you want to do and where you want to go next. Even if you somehow catch a glimpse of this — which is hard — you still have to execute the plan. Despite this, not making plans won’t really get you anywhere — or at least, you shouldn’t count on it. I suppose that’s why people go to fortune tellers. Wouldn’t it be great if someone could just tell you exactly what you need to do next in life? Maybe not great, but easy. Easier.

I’m starting to get some glimpses of what I want to do next, even if it’s a little hazy. It’s like getting quick and fleeting visions from a crystal ball.

I drew this the same day that Pope Francis was elected. Let it be known that I don’t have a problem with spirituality in of itself but that I do have a problem with things people do in the name of one spirt or another.

There’s a larger drawing I haven’t quite finished yet entitled “Graphic Novel” that has a sort of similar idea to this one; however, this drawing isn’t a full graphic novel — it’s just a single page. It seems to be a page that deals with the inner thoughts and feelings of the main character. I think her feelings are fluctuating along with the colors and lines behind her; She’s got something on her mind. It may or may not be me, and it may or may not be multiple characters. Actually, I kind of think it’s the same character at multiple stages of her life, perhaps thinking the same thought at different vantage points. But I’m not sure.
