The Only Place That’s Safe

The Only Place That’s Safe
Alex Hinders, 2012.
Colored pencil and pen.

This drawing tells the story of a young transgendered teenager. She feels as though it isn’t safe to tell anyone outside of her room her secret — friends or family, — and so her true self is confined to one small room. No one knows her true self. This one room is safe but the fact she’s so limited only causes further alienation and isolation. She dreams of a time when things will be different and she’ll be free.

This has a surrealistic feel to it the way you’ve drawn, this fractured between the two worlds. Salvador Dali-ish. Kind of like the softening of hard lines and hardening of soft lines he went for. The female aspect is drawn in fluid, dreamy lines that cross hard lines like the wall and the edge of the bed. Makes quite an impact.
